Antivirus Developer and Cryptocurrency Advocate Found Dead in Prison Following Approved Expedition
John McAfee is the eponymous developer and founder of McAfee antivirus software. He established his software company in 1980. The cybersecurity company propelled into a multi-billion dollar business soon enough. He went on to sell his company for a whopping $7.6 billion. However, bad times strike the software mogul in 2020 when he was arrested in Spain for failing to file tax returns.
McAfee was said to have been trying to flee and get aboard a plane to Turkey when he ran away. The US department of justice also charged him with retaining tax liabilities for four years. DOJ prosecutors claimed that he was trying to dodge tax returns for the income that he acquired against offering private consultations. Allegedly McAfee was concealing private property and undeclared assets. He was also convicted for hiding his income by transferring money to the cryptocurrency exchange accounts in the name of the other nominees.
The Controversy around the Death of the McAfee Founder has Become more Viral in the Media
At one end, the Spanish law enforcement authorities claim that all the circumstances and evidence surrounding McAfee’s death are pointing towards suicide. On the other hand, a good number of people believe that his death was an arranged murder, and it is being connected to making a political statement.
McAfee was to be transferred to the US under the decree of expedition passed by the Spanish courts. An expedition is a legal process where a prisoner who has been convicted in one state or country is moved to another jurisdiction for facing more charges. John McAfee was also facing several criminal charges in the court of law other than white-collar crimes.
The Defense Team Representing McAfee Claims that He was Innocent and Ready to Plead his Case in the United States
In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged McAfee for having connections with an illicit ICO (Initial Coin Offering). He was also accused by the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission of initiating a pump and dump campaign in the cryptocurrency markets.
The Law enforcement office of Spain maintains that the extent of his expedition was limited to the tax evasion charges. John McAfee hired Gordon Law Group to represent him in March 2021. The law firm representatives told media that the defendant retained his stance on pleading not-Guilty and was planning to fight for his release in the United States. On the other hand, McAfee has been claiming in the court that he was being targeted while courts dismissed his notion for inability to provide any solid evidence.
